I'll be honest, I was over-the-moon unicorns and rainbows type of excited when this surrogate mother reached out to me about capturing their birth. It was just as amazing as I had hoped. It was so touching and beautiful! I must admit I was a little nervous about the birth leading up to the day. I typically meet with families face-to-face before the birth but this wasn't the case. I had only done this one other time as a back-up doula when I first started out. This was also my first surrogate experience. The surrogate mother was also a professional photographer. Talk about pressure! I had to be on my A-game. I was so honored that all of them choose me to capture their birth.
When you walk into a birth you have no idea how long you will stay with that particular family. It could be as short as 2-3 hours or it can be over 24 hours, which is why it is incredibly important that you get along and connect well with the family you are working for. Usually I'm the only one with the couple giving birth, but occasional another family member or friend. This time around it was TWO sets of parents. It was so special to be able to capture both perspectives. I loved their strong bond with one another. It was a treasure to capture a glimpse of those relationships.
Witnessing a surrogate birth truly touched my heart in ways I had no idea it would affect me. It was true human love and connection. I came away from this birth wanting to be the best person I could be. There is so much love in the world. You can always find love and authentic connection in people's birth stories.
